Laser imaging nephelometer for aircraft deployment

Abstract. Validation of remote sensing retrievals aerosol microphysical and optical properties requires in situ measurements the same properties. We present here an improved imaging nephelometer for measuring directionality polarization light (i.e., polarimetry) scattered at two wavelengths (405 660 nm) with high temporal resolution. The instrument was designed airborne deployment is capable ground-based as well. laser (LiNeph) uses orthogonal detectors wide-angle lenses linearly polarized sources to measure both phase function, P11(?), degree linear polarization, -P12/P11(?). Here, field smoke plumes that show LiNeph has sufficient resolution 0.24 Hz polarimetric wavelengths, 405 nm, integrated scattering coefficients ranging from 50–8000 Mm?1.
